A standard coincidence story is about how people met their partner: if only they had not gone on that date, if only the car had not broken down outside the farm with the beautiful daughter … well, what of it? They would have met someone else, perhaps been happier or unhappier, but would have muddled through somehow. Or they may have been hit by a bus.
